The Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) Local 1001 supports transit and transit-oriented development. The Local represents 2,300 transit workers: bus drivers, light rail operators, mechanics (diesel and electro), facility maintenance and clerical personnel. We deliver award-winning service to RTD riders throughout the Denver Metropolitan Area.
The ATU Executive Board is elected by the union members and is comprised of three (3) full-time officers (President, Financial Secretary, Recording Secretary) and eleven part-time officers (one Vice President and ten Chief Stewards). Additionally, there are appointed Assistant Stewards.
Chartered in 1933, ATU represented Denver Tramway Company streetcar and bus drivers and continued doing so when seven separate regional bus companies were merged to create RTD in 1974. We have been the voice for RTD workers since then.
Local 1001 is a member of the International Amalgamated Transit Union, the largest transit labor union in the United States and Canada with 180,000 members in 268 locals in 46 states and nine provinces. ATU is affiliated with the state and national AFL-CIO.
